The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Elizabeth Salmón, will make an official visit to the Republic of Korea from February 2 to 6.
The Special Rapporteur is mandated to monitor and examine the human rights situation in the DPRK and report to the UN General Assembly and the Human Rights Council. Special Rapporteur Salmón is the fourth to hold this mandate. This visit is the third official visit since Special Rapporteur Salmón assumed her role in August 2022.
※ The mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the DPRK was established in 2004 pursuant to Resolution 2004/13 of the then UN Commission on Human Rights, succeeded by the UN General Assembly Resolution 60/251, which established the Human Rights Council in 2006. The mandate has been extended annually by Human Rights Council resolutions.

During her visit to the ROK, Special Rapporteur Salmón will meet with government officials, including those from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Unification, and the Ministry of Justice, as well as members of civil society. From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vice Minister Kim Jina will meet with the Special Rapporteur on February 2.
Special Rapporteur Salmón will hold a press conference regarding her visit at the Seoul Global Center on February 6.
